Understand the Specification Behind the Coir
Commercial coir should be evaluated against the requirements of the product and growing system rather than by product name alone. Serendeco uses available technical information and grower requirements to help define, compare and discuss proposed coir specifications.
The Product Name Is Only the Starting Point
Products described as coco pith, grow slabs, grow bags, husk chips or compressed coir can be supplied in different formats and specifications. A meaningful comparison therefore needs to look at the parameters relevant to the intended application.
Define the Product
Format, dimensions, substrate structure, EC requirement, processing and packaging help define what is actually being requested or quoted.
Relate It to the System
The relevant specification should be considered alongside the crop, container or slab format, irrigation arrangement and intended use.
Evaluate Before Scale
Where practical, available technical information and a commercial trial can be used to assess a proposed product before larger-volume supply.
Parameters That May Form Part of a Coir Specification
Not every parameter applies to every coir product. Values, ranges, tolerances and test methods should be treated as product-specific and confirmed against the relevant manufacturer documentation before being represented as part of a commercial specification.
EC
Electrical conductivity is used as an indicator of soluble salt concentration. Any quoted EC value should be considered together with the stated test or extraction method where that information is available.
pH
pH describes the acidity or alkalinity measured under the stated test conditions. Where pH forms part of a product specification, the value and test method should be confirmed from the relevant technical data.
Substrate Structure
The relative proportions and grading of coco pith, fibre and husk-chip fractions can form part of the physical substrate specification.
Expanded Volume
Expanded volume can be an important commercial parameter for compressed blocks, briquettes, discs and other formats. The applicable figure should be confirmed for the specific product and stated measurement basis.
Moisture
Moisture content may be specified for certain compressed or bulk coir products. Where relevant, the applicable value or range should come from manufacturer-supported product data.
Bulk Density & Compression
Bulk density, compressed weight, dimensions and compression format may be relevant to product definition, handling, packaging and commercial loading calculations.
Water-Holding Capacity
Where water-holding capacity is stated for a substrate, the figure should be supported by product-specific technical data and interpreted according to the measurement method used.
Air-Filled Porosity
Where air-filled porosity is specified, the value should be supported by product-specific technical information and considered together with the stated test method and substrate condition.
Dimensions & Configuration
For slabs, grow bags, discs, pots and other defined formats, dimensions and relevant planting, dripper, drainage or packaging configurations can form part of the agreed product specification.
A Technical Value Needs Its Measurement Context
A number on a specification sheet is most useful when the measurement basis is understood. Where available, Serendeco will refer to the manufacturer-supported method associated with the quoted product data rather than treating values obtained by different methods as directly interchangeable.

Washed, Buffered and Other Processing Requirements
Processing terminology should describe the product actually being offered. Washing and buffering are different treatments, and neither should be assumed simply from the product name.
Washed Coir
Washing is used in the processing of coir where reduction of soluble salts is required. Where washed or low-EC material is requested, the applicable EC specification and supporting manufacturer data should be confirmed for the quoted product.
Buffered Coir
Buffering is a separate treatment from washing. Serendeco will only describe a product as buffered where that processing is supported by the relevant manufacturer information for the product being offered.
The Relevant Specification Depends on the Product Format
The information needed for a commercial grow slab is not identical to the information needed for a compressed block, husk-chip product or propagation format.

Documentation varies by product and manufacturer. Serendeco will only represent technical values, certificates, treatments or other product claims where they are supported by documentation relevant to the product being offered.

Technical & Quality Questions
What does EC tell me about coir?
EC is used as an indicator of soluble salt concentration. When comparing values, the stated test or extraction method should also be considered where that information is available.
Is washed coir the same as buffered coir?
No. Washing and buffering are different processing treatments. A product should only be described as buffered where the relevant manufacturer information supports that description.
Why does the test method matter?

Do all Serendeco products have the same technical specification?
